Preppy on a budget!

I’ve had a request from a reader that I write a post about how to create preppy style when you’re on a budget.  She doesn’t like to spend a lot of money on clothes, and told me that we often feature items that are a bit pricy.  I can definitely see her logic, so today’s post is all about finding the classic prep look for less!

First stop on my search was Forever21.  They are a great place for cute finds on the cheap.

Striped dress; polka dot cardigan; striped sweater; color blocked top; pink blazer

The next place I looked was Target.  Their website is a little hard to navigate, so I only included their rain boots on this post, but the next time you’re there I definitely recommend checking out the women’s section.  There are always so really great preppy finds!

Blue polkadot rainbootsfrog critter rainbootsyellow polkadot rainboots; plaid rainboots; penguin critter rainboots.

Lastly, I looked at Lands End Canvas.  I only included them because their sale prices are truly INSANE.  Right now, a lot of their fall/winter stuff is on sale, and they seriously have me wishing I didn’t give up shopping for lent.  Wool cable kind sweaters for under $20?!?!?! Yes , PLEASE!

Cable knit pullovers; wrap skirts; cable knit cardigans

Some other stores with preppy style and great bargains include Old Navy, Marshalls and TJ Maxx, and of course outlet stores.  Happy shopping!

Do you have any other store where you like to hunt for preppy deals?  Leave it in the comments!

Lions and tigers and midterms, oh my!

Yes, all three of those things are equivalent.  It’s the week before spring break for me and I have two midterms on Thursday.  I had one the past week, and papers due before that.  The middle of the semester is probably my least favorite time of the semester – you feel like it just started, but there’s still so much further to go.  Here’s some of my midterm essentials.

1. Coca-Cola.  Seriously, caffeine is essential.  I recently discovered that I’m lactose intolerant and I don’t know how to drink coffee without a lot of cream…so I’ve had to find caffeine in other sources.  Right now, Coke is fulfilling that in my life.  Probably awful, but it gets the job done.

2. Printing money.  UNC doubled the price of their printing this year…the semester is not even halfway over yet and I’m already about out of money.  And for some reason, I need to have the readings practically memorized for one of my midterms.  UNC students, I’m accepting printing money donations of all amounts.

3. Nike running shorts & lots of sweatshirts.  I know some people have that whole “dress well, test well” philosophy.  I disagree.  You’ll find me looking pretty comfortable on midterm weeks.  If I’m comfortable, I think so much better.

4. Pandora One.  I got a subscription for my birthday, and I know Pandora gives you unlimited listening now, but I think it’s totally worth the paid subscription.  All the skips you want AND uninterrupted listening.  I swear, the absence of advertisements makes my studying more productive.

5. Sleep and showers.  Seriously, it’s not worth depriving yourself of sleep for a few extra hours of studying.  And nothing is worth the repulsion people around you are going to feel if you aren’t showering.  Public service announcement: Exams are not an excuse to forgo personal hygiene.  Everyone around you in the library will thank you for just taking a quick shower.  You’ll feel better if you do.

Instagram

I know many us have already caught the Instagram bug, but if you have not please let me introduce you to its greatness!  Instagram is a free photo-taking and photo-sharing app that allows you to create interesting photo effects right on your iphone. By adding different filters you can create a variety of pictures.  Two of my favorite effects are “Earlybird” and “1977.” You can share your Instagrams on Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, and Flickr. Here are some of my recent pictures:

Rain, Rain Go Away.

Since apparently the entire nation missed the memo about winter (currently knocking on wood that there isn’t a blizzard coming out of nowhere), the next season coming up is Spring! Spring is my favorite season because it includes so many great holidays including my personal fave St. Patrick’s Day/my birthday! Anyways, with Spring comes rain. But don’t fret Prepsters, The Prep Crew has a solution! When it looks yucky and gloomy outside, that’s when you have to bring out the preppy rain gear…

This includes:

Bean Boots for those classic prepsters. Perfect on chilly days!

Hot Pink Hunter Wellies to combat those gray, cloudy skies.

Lifesaving North Face Venture jacket with a built in visor to protect from the rain.

A monogrammed umbrella, because honestly, when does a monogram not make you feel better?

And last but not least, if all else fails, embrace the weather in this Anthropologie Rickey Bikini. Puddle jumping anyone?

I hope this cheers up all of your cloudy days and reminds you that Spring is near!

Outfit of the day! 2-23-12

You guys, it’s flip-flop weather outside!  And I don’t have to wear a jacket outside…is this really February in Massachusetts?!  I really can’t believe it!

  • Navy cardigan: Lands’ End Canvas.  These sweaters come in SO MANY great colors, and the price can’t be beat!
  • Polo: Lacoste.  The original preppy shirt.  I am obsessed with my Lacostes!
  • Jeans: American Eagle Outfitters. I’ve always been a fan of AE jeans, and am in love with this straight cut.  This cut is only available online and not in stores, though.
  • Flip-flops: Old Navy. A spring/summer staple! So cheap you can buy them in every color!
  • Misc.: Michael Kors watch, ribbon belt made by friend, pearl earrings, Essie nail polish in “Mob Square” on my fingers and “In Stitches” on my toes.

Writing A Book Review While Still Reading The Book

Hello!! After seeing the movie trailer for The Lucky One, I was like, well, I want to see this movie, so this is my chance to finally read a Nicholas Sparks book before I see the movie. A while back, my amazing friend, a Sparks’ fan, told me about his book that would star Zac Efron in the movie version. I was like “Good…I finally can read a NS book and then watch the movie”. Mind you, I love Zfron with my heart. I find him to be a total stud muffin, as with any “pretty boy”. I am not the kind of person to not read, but I always “forget” to read the book before the movie comes out. After seeing quite a ton of tear jerking Sparks’ films, I decided I would read this one. Now, this book would have not really sparked (get it, the author’s last name is Sparks!) my interest at all if the actor was not Zac. I am more of a star crossed lover tale in South Carolina, not about people who work in such heroic career (Dear John/The Lucky One), because it is too sad and I am still clueless about rankings/military terms/countries we are at war with. I like sappy, not tragic! But somehow I enjoy Apocalypse Now. But any who, The Lucky One. I love romantic movies, but I have actually never read a true romantic book. Gossip Girl not included. Until now. A brief fact about me: When I start a book, I cannot do anything until I finish it, in that day. I loved to read with a passion. However, I was shocked that since I could read the back of a cereal box and be intrigued that reading only the first 20 pages of this book made me what to cover my head with said box. I have read amazing works of literature, seeing as my favorite books are all “banned”. Now why cannot I get through this book, or have to put it down?! I will finish this book, in time. It is well written, and it is very good, so what is holding me back? I think I have the answer. I keep waiting for that twist to come at the end, even though I am at page 40. If I have never seen a movie based off a Sparks’s book, I would have been done and given a real review of this. Do not you worry; I will give a real one sooner or later.

Now, what is this about? That is a great question! I will boil it down to a few sentences; my terms…then I will post the real one. Chadsey version: There is a young man in the military (tour?) who finds a beautiful young woman’s picture in the sand. He is pretty awful at poker, but after finding the photo… (I do not want to be the one who ruins it for you, so I will let the author do it for me).

“After U.S. Marine Logan Thibault finds a photograph of a smiling young woman buried in the dirt during his tour of duty in Iraq he experiences a sudden streak of luck — winning poker games and even surviving deadly combat. Only his best friend, Victor, seems to have an explanation for his good fortune: the photograph — his lucky charm.

Back home in Colorado, Thibault can’t seem to get the woman in the photograph out of his mind and he sets out on a journey across the country to find her. But Thibault is caught off guard by the strong attraction he feels for the woman he encounters in North Carolina – Elizabeth, a divorced mother — and he keeps the story of the photo, and his luck, a secret. As he and Elizabeth embark upon a passionate love affair, his secret soon threatens to tear them apart — destroying not only their love, but also their lives.

Filled with tender romance and terrific suspense, THE LUCKY ONE is an unforgettable story about the surprising paths our lives often take and the power of fate to guide us to true and everlasting love.” Back of the book, The Lucky One, by Nicholas Sparks.

Do not feel like you will hate the book just because I am only at page 40 and bought it last week, it is very good, this is my first reading of a Nicholas Sparks’s book after watching all of the films based on them and felt like I can share what I am feeling towards them! This does not seem like a book review, but this is like a background to the real review! Stay tuned! 🙂

Who wears short-shorts?

Ok, it’s only February, but there are two things have warm weather on my mind: 1. spring break (even though I’m not going anywhere warm), and 2. it’s going to reach 60 degrees here in Mass today! Crazy!

So, in honor of the sunshine and warmer temps, I’m going to feature my favorite shorts of all, J.Crew’s chino shorts.  I’m a fan of the 3″ and 5″ inseam lengths, but they also have them in 7″ and 9″ lengths.  What I love about these shorts is that they never change them.  They come out every year in fresh colors, but the cut and fit is always the same.  It’s wonderful.

Look at all the fun colors!

The best thing about these shorts is that you can wear them with anyyyything! The possibilities are nearly endless!

Are you excited for shorts weather, too?

Have less things, but have great things

Several weeks ago, I had to do a probate inventory (or a fancy way to describe a list) of everything in my dorm room for a class I’m in on the material culture of the South.  I was completely overwhelmed by all the useless stuff I have!  I came across the quote the other day and I’ve been thinking about it ever since.  We could all stand to have a little bit less stuff.  So much of what I have is essentially useless.  So, why not cut down on the amount, but focus on the quality?  This can be applied to so many different things – instead of buying a top you’ll only wear once, opt for something with quality that will last.  Declutter your life, and make the things you have count.

Spring Break

Although it has been a mild winter in the northeast, I am certainly ready for some beach time!  For most of us spring break is coming up within the next few weeks, so it is time to start thinking about swimwear.  This season I am all about bandeaus with mismatched bottoms. Here are some examples of my favorite look:
