The Starboard Sea

I just finished “The Starboard Sea” by Amber Dermont and absolutely loved it! First of all, although you are not supposed to judge a book by its cover, it had such a preppy cover that I immediately knew I would enjoy it!  I have always been intrigued by the prep school culture and social life.  I really enjoyed “A Separate Piece” by John Knowles and the slightly less academic read, “Prep” by Curtis Sittenfeld.  “The Starboard Sea” is coming of age novel about a rising senior, Jason Prosper, who was been kicked out of an elite boarding school and transferred to another prep school with the help of his father’s money and alumni connections.  Set in New England in 1988, the novel accurately depicts the privilege and lifestyle of the upper class amidst the 1987 financial crash.  Complete with your typical prep school hazing, parties, and romance, the novel offers a window into the students’ lives. However, the students’ struggles go beyond the glamour of their wealth. The novel is centered around Jason’s love of sailing as the novel appears to be set at Tabor Academy, which is located right on the shores of Marion, Massachusetts. Jason’s love of the sea is a driving force throughout the novel and ultimately becomes his guiding light during his time at Bellingham Prep.  Between prep school and sailing what is not to love? Once again I truly enjoyed this summer read and would definitely recommend it!  I could go on and on about this book…but I am going to let you read the rest!

Seersucker, White, and Madras, Oh My!

With Memorial Day comes an even more exciting time of year. It means that we can all wear white, seersucker, and Madras! What could be better than that? Here are a few ideas for a Memorial Day Barbecue or any other event to celebrate the official kick-off to Summer. Both have subtle red, white, and blue theme to celebrate the holiday without screaming patriotic or Fourth of July, which will be saved for a later post :). So dust off your white Jack Rogers and get ready to celebrate, it is officially Summer! Happy Memorial Day Weekend from The Prep Crew!

Memorial Day!

Memorial Day Weekend!

Its officially Memorial Day Weekend and we all know what that means…the official beginning of SUMMER! I know you are all just as excited as I am for the fun and good times that comes along with the beginning of the season and I am going to share some of the fun activities to partake in and get involved in with family, friends and loved ones!

Memorial Day is PERFECT for your first trip to the beach or the shore! So break out those bathing suits you had stored away from last summer, or even better, find some new cute ones! Target has proved to be such a great place for the best new bathing suits this season! I am loving the nautical feel of stripes this summer and this top goes right along with my style!

I also LOVE bows and this cute bandeau top is precious!

I am also a huge fan of bright colors: turquoise, magenta, plum, sea foam green, lemon,  and neon! This bright blue/green top with a cute applique is so stylish and summery!

The best part about these tops: being able to mix and match the bottoms, so you may never even wear the same bathing suit all season!

Also, it is FLEET WEEK in New York City over Memorial Day Weekend! It is so much fun because fun (and cute!) naval officers come into town and love chatting with you and getting to know the city from locals! I know all the Long Island/New England prepsters will be hitting up Manhattan this weekend!

Also, since I am a southern college girl and am soon heading down to spend my summer in the lowcountry, spending time out on the river or the lake is a MUST for summer weekends! In Charleston, we have “Shaggin on the Cooper” every Friday night, where locals and visitors alike meet down on the docks of the Cooper River to dance the state dance, the Shag, and meet and greet with other fun loving folks! Its always a good time getting to dance under the moonlight to fun beach music and meet some fun and outgoing people!

SHOPPING! Everyone knows Memorial Day brings huge sales to all your favorite stores and malls! If the weather proves to be too hot or rainy, head to the mall to take advantage of some amazing deals! Target has some hot shoes this season, if your in the market for some wedges or heels or sandals in bright, summery colors! Also, keep a look out for some emails from some of your favorite retailers because I am sure they’ll be keeping you informed of some price cuts or discounts in order of the holiday!

Spring/Summer tops wish list

I went shopping with my mom this past weekend–and let me tell you–there are so many cute tops out there right now! Mostly it’s just wishful thinking for me cause I haven’t really started my summer job yet, but all of these would look awesome in my wardrobe. I love all the bright colors and fun patterns I’m seeing out there this season. Also…all the stripes!

What are some of your must-have tops this season? Leave it in the comments!

The First Boat Ride of the Season

The weather has been beautiful the last couple of days!  Each year my summer always begins with the first boat ride.  I have truly grown up on boats my whole life.  I have had my boater’s license since I was eleven and have been wearing Sperries since I was a child (when it was not cool to wear them).

Day on the boat:

Great day on the water:

The Shops at Target.

I think I’ve made it pretty clear by now that I am a huge Target fan. This makes their recent addition of The Shops at Target even more exciting! While most of them are super random and not at all helpful to the typical prepster, The Webster at Target has some really adorable and affordable items that are perfect for the Summer. They definitely channeled the whole color blocking trend which I am really loving right now. I would definitely check it out if I were y’all and I might already own a few of the items myself :).

These shoes are perfect for a summer on the cape, shore, or wherever you may be! Navy and coral is one of my fave color combos right now!

Also loving this navy and green cardigan for those chilly summer nights.

I think this shirt would be adorable with a pair of white or colored skinnies. Don’t you?

This dress would be super cute either over a bathingsuit or to a casual lunch or dinner by the beach.

Anyone else loving The Shops at Target?

Summertime and the Living is Easy

Havaianas lemon shoes $26 – Old Navy flat heels $3.94 – Strappy leather sandals $49 – Jack rogers shoes Tory Burch beach shoes $195 –
Hey guys, it’s Katie covering for Karoline while she vacations on the Cape (jealous!) Anyways, since she is out on the beach and for most of us, Summer has officially started, I decided to post on Summer footwear. Now, I am not going to lie, while I am a big fan of sandals, I don’t wear flip flops unless I am on the beach. I love Jack Rogers and can be seen almost daily in my platinum pair, but flip flops are just not for me plus they hurt my feet! With that said, if I do need a waterproof shoe for the beach or pool, Old Navy four dollar flip flops can’t be beat, how’s that for affordable? Most of these shoes are not waterproof (though I must say my Jacks have been through some pretty aggressive rain storms and made it out okay), but they are perfect for lounging at the pool, hotel, or anywhere summery. Between the rainbows, Jacks, Tory Burch’s, Havianas, and Old Navy sandals, there is something for everyone! What is your Summer Staple footwear?

Guilty Pleasure

Each year my sister and I get obsessed with one show and we end up buying all of the seasons.  This year for Christmas we got the complete series of Friends.  Ever since we have been working our way through each season and now we have officially seen every episode. We always love watching sitcoms together because they are so mindless.  Last year we watched got all the seasons of Gilmore Girls.  It is amazing how you get so immersed into the show that you start talking like the characters. What are some of your guilty pleasure shows?

Beach bag 101

School’s out for the summer, so that means it’s time to head out by the water and get some sun! Whether it’s the beach, pool, or lake you need some necessities to get you through the day. Here’s some tips on what to bring!

The Bag:

You’re going to need a tote that can hold all of the items you need, plus all of the miscellaneous items you end up taking with you. If you’re anything like me, you always end up carrying around things you don’t need. So you’re going to need a good size bag.  Here are some of my faves:

$: LL.Bean Bote and Tote, starts at $19.95. The original, the classic, I’ve had one of these bags for nearly 8 years and it’s one of the best $25 I’ve ever spent. So durable, and if it ever rips or breaks (hint: it won’t) LL.Bean will replace it for free! It’s a prep icon, and you can even get it monogrammed so you can tell it apart from everyone else’s!

$$: J.Crew Boardwalk Tote, $49.50. I really like the stripes on this bag, because they give it a nautical, beachy feel. Plus, the navy color means it won’t show dirt easily.

$$$: Kate Spade Tiki Bon Shopper, $148.00. Pricy, yes, but the cocktail print is darling. Piña Coladas, Mojitos, Mai Tai’s…mmmm I’m dreaming for a sunny tropical happy hour! Also, it’s made of durable coated poplin, so it can be wiped down and is fairly weatherproof on the outside. Cheers!

After you have the bag, essentials include a towel, sunglasses, a good read, chapstick, sunscreen, a good hat, and a water bottle. These big bags ensure you’ll be able to fit everything in one place!

What’s your go-to beach bag?

xoxo, Karoline

After my exams ended Thursday afternoon at 1:30 p.m., I have done a whole lot of nothing.  My days have consisted of sleeping until 1 p.m., going on spontaneous adventures, eating breakfast at 4 p.m. and watching horror movies.  Let me tell y’all, nothing has ever been more glorious than the past five days of my life.  After a ridiculously stressful semester, this summer break has been more than welcome.  If you’re still suffering through exams, I wish you the best.  If summer break is here for you, I’m sure you’re as relieved as I am and I hope you’re relaxing just as much as I’ve been able to.  Now that it’s summer, I’m able to get around to doing a lot of things I’ve wanted to do for awhile.

  1. Read books for fun.  As much as I love my majors, they require a ton of reading and writing.  All that required reading doesn’t leave a lot of time for reading things I want to read for myself.  I’m finally going to get around to finishing Bossypants and The Girl Who Played With Fire.
  2. Eat real food.  Finals doesn’t leave much time for eating actual food, and my final weeks of school were filled with a lot of caffeine, bagels and Chick-Fil-A chicken nuggets.  For the first time in my life, I’m kind of excited to eat vegetables?  Go figure.
  3. Sleep a lot.  And after that, sleep even more.  I’m so sleep deprived and it’s awful.  I can practically fall asleep on command right now.  Obviously that’s going to have to be corrected.
