Enjoying Spring

After what seems like an endless winter, spring finally seems to be in the air. The surest sign for me? I don’t have to wear a jacket anymore! I am beyond happy to start breaking out the shorts and sandals. The flowers are starting to come up and yesterday (much to my delight) was the first day I was able to sit out on the quad with my homework. Getting some sun felt SO good.

Yesterday, my boyfriend reluctantly agreed to be featured in an outfit of the day post. He just looked so casually springy that I had to share. So, here’s what we were wearing:

On Matt: shirt, Lands’ End Canvas; shorts, American Eagle; boat shoes, Dockers.

On me: sunglasses, Maui Jim; shirt, J.Crew Factory; shorts, Old Navy; boat shoes, Sperry.

How have you been enjoying the weather?

Your L.L. Bean Boyfriend and Girlfriend

I might be a little late to the party here, but I recently discovered the blogs “Your L.L. Bean Boyfriend” and “Your L.L. Bean Girlfriend” and had to share. The site couples preppy eye-candy from the L.L. Bean catalog and website with captions giving fun date ideas. Reading it is like being transported to prep utopia…you’re instantly dreaming about shacking up in a Maine cottage with this gorgeous model.

I think the best part of this site is that it’s not dirty at all. It’s completely up to the reader to add their own fantasy to the picture. Whoever came up with it definitely had a funny and brilliant idea!

Hope you enjoy the mid-week eye candy!

Like Christine mentioned yesterday, it’s still snowy and cold in lots of different places. However, today is the first day of spring! That means that sunny days, flowers, and warmer weather are right around the corner!

One thing I am loving this spring is J.Crew Factory’s popover shirts in Oxford and chambray. They are perfect for nearly any occasion. Throw one on with jeans, shorts, or a skirt and you’re instantly polished but still so comfy. You can even use it as a coverup for days at the beach! (I wish I was there now…)

However you choose to style yours, have fun with it 🙂

What are you loving this spring?

Pop art is one of my favorite kinds. My freshman year, I took a class on the history of pop art and I just absolutely fell in love. That’s why, when I saw that Kate Spade had done a number of Roy Lichtenstein-inspired pieces, I fell in LOVE! He is my absolute favorite artist in the genre, I love his bold lines and comic book feel. Something about it just screams fun…the art isn’t super serious. I think that’s the perfect way to sum up Kate Spade, too–fun and not super-serious, but definitely still chic.

Do you love pop art? What do you think of Kate Spade’s collection?

Happy Galentine’s Day!

I’ve been watching a lot of Parks and Recreation lately (seriously, you should check it out on Netflix!), and one thing that I really love is “Galentine’s Day”. For those of you not in the know, Galentine’s Day was created by the show’s main character, Leslie Knope, to celebrate all of the great ladies in her life. It’s celebrated on February 13th, and is an awesome excuse to tell all of your girlfriends why you love them.

Here are some ideas to help you celebrate with friends:

  • Treat your best friend to her favorite latte
  • Have an all girls pajama party and rent chick flicks from RedBox
  • Bake cookies!
  • Write a letter to your best lady friends telling them how much you appreciate them
  • Get them a new bottle of nail polish you know they’ll love
  • Host a cocktail night

Today I am definitely going to be spreading the love to all of the great women in my life!

In that spirit, I made some phone and desktop wallpapers to help you decorate! To download them, just click on the one you like best and then drag-and-drop onto your desktop! Enjoy 🙂

Note, all of the iPhone wallpapers are for the iPhone 4 and 4s, but if you would like one for the iPhone 5, please leave a comment and I can help you out! Also, the desktop wallpapers were made for MacBook/MacBook Pro.

Pop of Color: think pink!

There are so many ways to add fun pops of color into your wardrobe. My favorite way is usually with a fun sweater or shirt, but you can also let your accessories add spunk. Pink is one of my favorite colors and is definitely a mood-booster when you’re feeling a bit out of it. So, next time you’re feeling like you’re in a wardrobe rut–which is easy to do in the winter months!–think pink!

Anatomy of a ski outfit

Winter break is the perfect time to go on ski trips with friends and family! I’ve been skiing my whole life and have a bunch of friends ask me for advice in the past about what they should wear when they’re out on the mountain. On the flip side, as a racer and ski coach, I’ve seen some people wear truly bizarre things out on the slopes. For the past eight years, I have spent a majority of my winter days skiing, so I like to think that I’ve gotten dressing for it down to a science.

If you’re a newby to the snow, or if you’re just looking for a new outfit next time you head to the mountains, here’s what I’ve come up with:

1. TRUST: If your hands aren’t happy, neither are you. I personally like mittens, others like gloves…it’s just a matter of what works for you. The key thing here is to get a warm, waterproof pair. Find this pair here.

2. I am a huuuuge fan of turtle necks. Especially when I’m skiing. They are the perfect base layer and prevent cold air and snow from coming down your neck and chest while you’re outside. Just a basic cotton one will do, but high-tech base layers are also good. Find this one here.

3. Flannels are also good for keeping warm. Layering is key. I like flannels because they’re lightweight, soft, and pack in a bunch of warmth. Find this one here.

4. Long underwear is your friend!!! I know it sounds old fashioned, but it’s so comfy! I really don’t understand the people that don’t wear anything under their ski pants…I couldn’t do it!! Find this pair here.

5. Socks! For a day on the slopes you need a pair of good, TALL socks! A word to the wise: thick wool socks are no good in ski boots. They’re uncomfortable. Go for a specially-made ski sock, your feet will thank you. Find this pair here.

6. When it comes to jackets, I have always been a fan of the solid bright colors as opposed to trendy stripes or prints. This helps you get so much more life out of the jacket! When it’s solid, it will last practically forever without going out of style. Find this one here.

7. If you treat your pants well, they should last for years. I have had the same pair for over eight years and I still love them. Granted they’re race pants and are built to be sturdy, but they should last you awhile. Go for classic black: they hide the dirt better and will more than likely go with all of your gear. Find this pair here.

8. The helmet is important because it protects your head when you fall. I always think it’s fun when people have bright colored helmets, it helps show off their personality. US Ski Teamer Ted Ligety created his Shred brand with that in mind…not only are they top-notch helmets, but they come in awesome colors and styles. Some even have iPod connections! Find this one here.

9. Goggles are the last but certainly not least important part of any ski outfit. They protect your eyes! Mucho importante. Find this pair here.

It’s a little strange, but the inspiration for today’s post actually comes from my brother, Walter. Yesterday morning, he was giving my sister her Christmas present and was telling her why he got her a bangle from J.Crew. He said something along the lines of, “I was talking to the saleslady, and she told me it was enamel, and apparently that’s really….’in’ right now”. It was hilarious. “In” became the line of the day.

However, I was inspired to put together some fun bangles and bracelets to spice up your wardrobe. Whether you call them stacks or arm parties, they’re always fun.
